According to the American Heart Association, 90% of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die because they don't receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. Studies show that most Americans (70%) feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency. As a result, the Greenville City Fire Department (GCFD) is working to raise awareness about the benefit of hands-only CPR and empowering citizens to help prevent unnecessary deaths and possibly save the life of a co-worker, spouse, parent or friend.
Hands-only CPR, which is used on teenagers and adults, has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for cardiac arrest at home, at work or in public and can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival. In addition to holding Sidewalk CPR events in public spaces downtown, GCFD also conducts onsite hands-only CPR training for local businesses and community organizations. The free one-hour training is taught by GCFD personnel using CPR training manikins.
