[ARCHIVED] Community Helps Shape the Future Airport District

Community attending the airport district visioning session

What will the area around the Greenville Municipal Airport look like in the future? What types of businesses are needed? How can the open space best be used?

City of Greenville residents have been weighing in, and the planning study team is listening.

Most recently, the City hosted a public presentation on June 6. The presentation was part of a series of efforts by the City to involve neighbors and stakeholders in the conversation about the future of the Airport District.

The Airport District Planning Study aims to align future economic development and land use of the area with both the GVL2040 Comprehensive Plan — which includes goals on boosting affordable housing, transportation and open space — and the requirements of the Greenville Airport Commission.

During the public input session of the presentation, the City learned that 92% of attendees agreed or strongly agreed with the draft guiding principles of the Airport District Planning Study.

The community was the most supportive of a runway Loop Trail, following by improvements to the convention center area. Some additional ideas raised during the session included:

  • A possible traffic light at Eisenhower and Pleasantburg Drives
  • Available façade grants on Pleasantburg Drive and Laurens Road
  • High-quality hotels leading to a revitalized convention center

The Planning Study team will review market studies completed as part of the project as well as community input received to present a balanced framework for the various land uses of the area, including industrial, single-family residential and commercial. The project team also will consider possible zoning recommendations consistent with the new Greenville Development Code and recommendations for potential capital projects. The study will culminate in a master plan, a document that illustrates desired developments and land uses in the district.
