Through its Community Policing Zone Initiative, the Greenville Police Department has revised its patrol zone structure to establish four geographic areas of responsibility within the city. Our primary goal is to reduce neighborhood crime and disorder by providing services that resolve conflict, mitigate problems, reduce nuisances, and generally improve the quality of life within our neighborhoods and city.
The Greenville Police Department employs two major strategies to reinforce geographic ownership through Community Problem-Oriented Policing (CPOP). The first is data-driven assignment of long term, dedicated patrol officers within zones; the second is using problem solving methods to address underlying causes of crime and disorder, such as the SARA model (Scanning, Analyzing, Response, and Evaluation problem solving model). Through the SARA Model officers can; identify problems, determine causes, respond to these issues, and maintain after addressing these issues.
With the new zone structure, patrol officers along with other specialized units (Investigators, Community Response Team, Vice and Narcotics, etc.) are assigned to areas on a long-term basis, promoting geographic ownership of policing issues, people, residences, and businesses. CPOP then builds officers’ familiarity and knowledge of their regularly assigned patrol areas, helping to build trust and relationships with the community.
